Are Foldable Phones Good Enough in 2021?

Read Time:4 Minute, 9 Second

Foldable phones, phones with wrap-around displays, rolling phones, and flip phones have been around since 2020. Saying that foldable phones are ready for mainstream usage wouldn’t be so exaggerated. It wouldn’t be entirely true either. If you’re thinking of getting yourself a foldable phone, there are certain tradeoffs you’ll have to deal with.

Samsung foldable phones went mainstream first, followed by Motorola and Microsoft. Nonetheless, if you take a closer look at the prices of Z Flip or the cost of Moto Razr 2020, you’ll see a difference in style. Below are some of the aspects you should consider if you’re looking to purchase a foldable phone.

Here are a few things to consider when buying a foldable phone:

One important that no one can ever deny is the fact that foldable phones have been in the offing for quite a while and now users have more devices to pick from. If you’re looking for a foldable phone, which opens up like a mini-tablet, then you should go for the Microsoft Surface Duo or Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2. On the other hand, if you’re into flip hones, you have the Moto Razr and Galaxy Z Flip. Finally, if you want a device with a swivel, LG Wing will be a perfect device for you.

Although these are the most popular mainstream designs out there, we’ve seen triple folds and rolling phones being tested in 2021, so we can expect more is on the way. Essentially, the apple foldable iPhone is also on the way and there are videos of a Xiaomi model that is identical to the mini-tablet.

Therefore, if you’re looking for a swivel, flappable, or foldable phone, 2021 could be the best time to get yourself one. But before you buy one, let’s find out whether foldable phones are worth it.

Is A Foldable Phone Worth It?

When you choose to buy a foldable phone, you’re typically getting two screens on one phone and possibly a mini-tablet for a better browsing experience. Unfortunately, if you break the foldable phone, the repair costs are pretty high. For instance, replacing the Samsung Galaxy fold screen will cost you more than £150.

Another crucial aspect of the foldable phone that you’ll have to trade-off is the specifications. Although this isn’t the case in all foldable phones, it’s true for many. If you choose to buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, you’ll get the flagship specifications, but it also comes with Samsung’s bloatware. Other great options you can choose to buy are the LG Wing and the Moto Razr – both don’t have the flagship processor. Finally, you can opt to buy the Microsoft Surface Duo that comes with the Snapdragon 8-series SoC, but doesn’t have the new generation flagship chip. Also, it doesn’t have an outer screen; so, you’ll have to unfold it to see notifications.

Other important things that you should consider when buying a foldable phone are the specifications and repair costs. That said, foldable phones are great devices. The LG Wing and the Motorola Razr are both fitted with Snapdragon 765 5G SoC. This is a powerful processor but doesn’t match the Snapdragon 865+ that’s synonymous with many Android flagships.

When it comes to the software, the makers of these phone devices have made their apps, but many of the apps that people use almost every day aren’t optimized for the square screen of such foldable phones. For instance, Instagram is designed for the vertical scroll, so if you use it on an unfolded Samsung Galaxy Flip, it gets overstretched.

Best Foldable Phones

Today, you got the option of choosing between the 2020 foldable phones and the enhanced 2021 phones. The advantage of choosing from the 2020 phones is that these devices would be cheaper, and still a great choice. For instance, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 is a 5G device, is fitted with a flagship chip, and will be cheaper next year.

On the other hand, LG Wing is a great device if you’re looking for something more swivel and less fold-flippy. The device has a great camera, gimmicky design, and isn’t overpriced. However, if you’re looking for a cheaper foldable device with a great Android experience, then you should opt for Moto Razr.
