Moving cubes from world to world

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Today led to a rather exciting development. Since the original experiments with Second Life many of us from Hursley have wanted to apply the elements of pub/sub messaging that Hursley is known for to the transport of events from various virtual worlds.
Rob augmented his very cool Unity3d server worlds with the ability to consumer published [...]

T.I.G Virtual worlds industry outlook 2008-2009

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

In all the various birthdays, travelling and conferencings I realized I had not written anything here on eightbar to point those of you who dont know about it yet to Christian and Sean’s virtual worlds outlook report. It is certainly a must read document (thats not just because I get a mention either!)
You can get [...]

VW2008 impressions post show

Friday, September 5th, 2008

This years west coast event has, as usual, been very full of lots of conversation with all sorts of people. The IBM stand seemed to be a constantly busy place, and my shifts on there certainly were productive in terms of explaining what we do in general and what I do with the CIO office. [...]

Quick tour of the LA VW2008 expo floor

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Earlier in the year in New York I took a dash around video of the expo floor. Now we are here in LA doing the next one I thought I would do the same thing to compare and contrast. 41+ exhibitors this time. Look out for some metarati faces you may know.

Me and IBM :-)
Yes last night at the end of the first day of the virtual world expo I was asked up on stage after a very nice intro from Steve Prentice (whose speech featured the brilliant quote from Pirates of the Carribean that the pirates code is not so much of a rule as [...]

IBM is integrating OpenSim and Sametime in a significantly deep way.
There is more on that here, and a video below

This fits nicely with the key [...]

Doh! thats augmented reality!

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

I took a little research trip, as I am over on the west coast, to the universal park. Much of what is going on at this virtual worlds expo is Hollywood based, so to see what sort of experiences people enjoy and how they are done in with the current state of the art seemed [...]

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

A colleague Davide Barillari posted a link in an internal blog post to this marvelous piece and video showing a whole host of virtual worlds in one roundup video, interspersed with great quotes too. Its a very nice piece of work, I tried a short like this a while back and have never got to [...]

Come hear my dulcet tones on Dogear Nation

Monday, August 4th, 2008

On Friday I had the pleasure of being invited to the Michael and Michael Dogearnation show to talk all things metaverse. As Michael Rowe pointed out the last time I was on the show it was not a public gig as it is today. So if you have a few minutes to hear us jam [...]

CBR special on 50 years of Hursley Cool

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Andy-SC just twittered the link to this great article from Computer Business Review on Hursley’s 50th celebrations. It is particularly good as it documents the complete set of things that Hursley have done and are still doing including virtual worlds. Fellow eightbar author Rob (is there anything he cant do) Smart was interviewed by CBR [...]
