Bloc party
Last night I attended the GreaterIBM bloc party in Second Life that was mentioned a couple of days back. It was great fun - and testament to the hard work that the organisers put in to making it a success. Here are some pictures of what you may have missed.

Well done to everyone who made this happen. I couldn’t be there, so I want to hear more details! :-)

You beat me to it Andy. The event went very well, and Kevin did a superb job organizing it, as did all the volunteers who were marshalling, filming etc.
Its quite a logistical nightmare and when new people are being onboarded and finding their way around.
So well done to the entire team and thanks also to all the alumni and press who attended it was good to meet you all.

IBM?
Gone are the days of white shirts and dark blue suits… Hats off to Big Blue for taking a giant leap into the future.

[...] CNet: IBM is using the virtual world of Second Life as the next best thing to being there for corporate meetings. The venerable computer maker has established at least one virtual island in Second Life where it has hosted employee meetings. Earlier this month, for example, IBM held a virtual block party were people milled around a space called the SkyPOD. For screenshots of IBM’s virtual presence, click here. [...]

[...] SL now provides an open platform for organizations of all sizes and locations to do likewise. IBM is one of first RL organizations to have seen the light and have been experimenting within SL over the last two years. Most recently they held an event titled the Greater IBM Virtual Bloc Party in SL for its alumni and present members. Some members of its UK based Hursley Park Labs provided coverage of the event over on their weblog eightbar. [...]

[...] Really, why would I want to play a game where I can “party at nightclubs, attend fashion shows and art openings or just play games”. Is it really that hard to put a pair of shows on and walk out your door and do the same thing?! OK, so I can live with the agorophobes of the world who want to sit in front of a computer till their butt osmosises into the chair, but I get even more creeped out when the (real) companies jump on this and are now advertising throughout the (fake) world of Second Life (of note: 20th Century Fox held a movie premier, Starwood Hotels is building a virtual hotel there, MLB and ESPN have home run derbies , BBC had an online concert with Gnarls Barkley/Bloc Party/Franz Ferdinand, and Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society owns an island there to host events and conferences on the diplomacy of the whole Second Life premise, ironic, huh?!) [...] Rather than just quoting from the standard press articles about the various companies or formats that are setting up in Second Life (the media’s favourite MUVE at the moment) I have been ‘living it’ so to speak. My inworld blog JustVirtual covers quite a few of my avatars POV, close encounters with the outside world ‘brand immigrants’. Yes they are seen that way by many residents, not disimilar from any alien brand entering a developing world. The recent companies such as NBC, Philips Design, IBM, Reuters, Endemol and others over the past few weeks suggest the next generation of entrants with far more serious vision than the first wave, just pushing product. [...] Once you put in several hours flailing around learning how to function in Second Life, there isn’t much to do. That may explain why more than 85% of the avatars created have been abandoned. Linden’s in-world traffic tally, which factors in both the number of visitors and time spent, shows that the big draws for those who do return are free money and kinky sex. On a random day in June, the most popular location was Money Island (where Linden dollars, the official currency, are given away gratis), with a score of 136,000. Sexy Beach, one of several regions that offer virtual sex shops, dancing and no-strings hookups, came in at 133,000. The Sears store on IBM’s Innovation Island had a traffic score of 281; Coke’s Virtual Thirst pavilion, a mere 27. And even when corporate destinations actually draw people, the PR can be less than ideal. Last winter, CNET’s in-world correspondent was conducting a live interview with Anshe Chung, an avatar said to have earned more than $1 million on virtual real-estate deals, when Chung was assaulted by flying penises in a griefer attack. [...]

[...] World of Warcraft, Second Life, other MMORPGS - I think the resemblance of these to the Matrix is actually more superficial than anything else. They are obvious fantasy playgrounds. And yet…we read about WoW weddings, offline guilds, and more. Companies have virtual presences in Second Life. Real estate is bought and sold. Compare the experience of Mildred in Fahrenheit 451 and her 3-walled interactive-TV enclosure. Is that some way between virtual realities and alternate, livable realities? Does your Second Life avatar look just like you? Why not? [...]
